Nelly Furtado Preps Spanish Album

June 5th, 2009 by Jayvee

According to Billboard, Nelly Furtado will return to her Latina roots with an all Spanish album on Universal Music Latino.

The singer-songwriter burst on the mainstream scene back in 2000 with the highly infectious “I’m Like a Bird,” off the successful debut album Whoa…Nelly. While Furtado transformed into pop star status with her last release, Loose, she’s never been shy about mixing different sounds and experimenting with musical styles and languages.

Furtado, who is of Portuguese descent, recorded “Tu Fotografía,” a duet with Juanes, Colombian musician, which appeared on his album in 2002. Juanes later returned the favor by pairing again for “Te Busqué,” which appeared on Furtado’s Loose.

Although largely ignored by mainstream consumers, her 2003 release, Folklore, was highly eclectic in sound and heavily influenced by her Portuguese upbringing. The album focused around the dual life of being of Latino descent, but growing up in North American culture.

The all Spanish album is set for release on September 26th. I’m excited to see what Furtado has in store for this album, but I’m hoping she goes back to her song-writing roots vs. relying on the likes of Timbaland or even Calle 13 for collaborations.
