New Music: Ashley Arrison’s “Little Miss Plastic” & “Winter”

July 14th, 2009 by Jayvee

Ashley Arrison is no stranger to The Round Table. I stumbled upon her music back in April and I’ve been hooked since. Ashley’s been hard at work in the recording studio and testing out new material by playing limited engagements in various cities.

The week leading up to 4th of July, Ashley  hit a few hot spots for gigs in  Dallas, Texas and then Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Georgia. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make it all the way to Georgia to catch Ashley in action — stopped in Charlotte, NC to check out Tony Lucca and Benjy Davis Project — but thanks to an awesome Ashley fan we can pretend like we were in the house.

Among the new songs tested out was “Little Miss Plastic,” a witty warning to the fake chicks at bars who might be looking to scheme on her man. I’m no Ashley Arrison expert, but given the heavier themes of previous tracks off the Talking Circles EP, it’s pretty safe to say she was looking to have some fun with this one. Check the chorus: Little Miss Plastic/Guess you want your ass kicked/Cause you keep asking for it/Every time you walk by my baby

Then there’s the beautifully depressing “Winter” co-written by Shane Mack. According to a radio interview with The Baub Show, the track was inspired by a fan that told Ashley it seemed like she was “chasing winter” in response to her recent trip to Australia. It’s no secret by now that I tend to gravitate to songs that focus on regret, love lost, and bittersweet memories – “Winter” hits on all points — especially with the heartbreaking line “Just like you/Winter wouldn’t stay.”

You can watch more of Ashley Arrison’s recent performance at Eddie’s Attic on YouTube — special thanks to NomadSnaps. Also, be sure to check out her full interview with The Baub Show. Um…favorite quote at the  35:30 mark when Ashley comments “I know, I try so hard to write more uptempo songs – especially at the live shows I don’t want anyone to slit their wrists or anything.” Ashley just might be my new Fiona Apple. Just saying.
