Ryan Gosling: Not Just a Pretty Face, Inks Record Deal
July 9th, 2009 by Jayvee
The mere mention of the name Ryan Gosling sends ladies into a tizzy these days thanks to the success of the movie adaptation of “The Notebook” where he played the life long love interest of Rachel McAdams. Sadly, as an actor, his real stand out roles are the little known ones – “The Believer,” “The United States of Leland,” “Half Nelson,” and “Fracture.”
Probably another little-known fact about Gosling is that he’s a talented musician. Right, we all know he was part of The Mickey Mouse Club all-star cast that featured Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears, but I’m talking about his music work since, which includes solo efforts and as part of Dead Man’s Bones.
Dead Man’s Bones — consisting of Gosling and friend Zach Shields – has just signed a record deal with Anti-Records, the home to the likes of Tom Waits and Neko Case. The band’s sound is a far departure from the pop roots Gosling will no doubt be (wrongly) associated with as a result of the MMC connection. Check out the video after the cut of the group’s “Name in Store” – which is steeped in scratchy, blues music. An album release date has not been announced — but the band’s website says: “Soon.”
So what do you think? Are you digging Ryan Gosling the blues-soulman? For good measure, I included one of my favorite acoustic (solo) songs by Ryan “Put Me in the Car” below.

I love Ryan Gosling! Getting his song from iTunes right now. Plus I had no idea he is a musician… thanks for posting!

I like Dead Man’s Bones quite a bit more than the solo stuff. (These days, anything that sounds like John Mayer might be less than three degrees away makes me want to smash my acoustic guitar with a battle axe.) Though I will say that my favorite white guys with guitar(s) supported by a gospel choir are still Blur. It’s a small club? Plus I don’t really like Peter Gabriel after the first solo album.
I’m a much bigger fan of Jared Leto’s side project even though he may be a bit of a dandy when he’s talking about it. Maybe 30 StM reminded me a bit of Orgy – with less lip gloss? Speaking of, whatever happened to those guys?
Either way, no one’s arguing about the best actor-turned-singer.

Sarah,
Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s posted at iTunes – I’ll see what I can do for ya.

To paraphrase David Cross, I would rather listen to the death rattle of my own child than another John Mayer song. (He was talking about Creed.)
Word.

hahaha.. that’s how I feel about Creed
John Mayer, I can stomach for a little while at least. Scott Stapp though? No way.

I remember have a big soft spot for Creed when “My Own Prison” and “What’s This Life For” were spinning on the alternative stations. Then, somewhere around the time Human Clay came out, I started to question my devotion – I’m about five years from enjoying Creed nostalgically.
Another group I now can’t stand, but loved when they first came out is Fuel. Still, present dismissed, “Shimmer” has to go down as one of the best alternative tracks of the 90s.

I’m going to have to agree with the John Mayer comments. As a Dave fan, I had a bad taste for Mayer the first time I heard his stuff. I have always thought he was trying to be an exact copy of Dave Matthews. And unless they were really good friends, I struggled the entire time he was on stage, even considering the idea that he would perform at the Michael Jackson Memorial. I would sometimes rather get papercuts on my eyelids than listen to John Mayer.
