Listen Now & Download: Lykke Li “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”

November 24th, 2009 by Jayvee

Confession, I’m a HUGE fan of 50′s and 60′s doo-wop music. Dion & The Belmonts, Vito & The Salutaitons, Little Anthony & The Imperials, The Chantels, Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, and of course, The Shirelles, just to name a few. So, I’m pretty stoked to have come across Swedish singer and favorite of The Round Table, Lykke Li, covering The Shirelles “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.”

Lykke Li’s version is stripped down with just a piano backing in a pretty sweet room for acoustics creating a natural echo that makes for a haunting twist on Shirelle’s more up-tempo classic. It’s quite heartbreaking, which makes it amazing. Which do you prefer, Lykke Li’s take or the original? Check out The Shirelle’s version after the cut.

As much as I hate to come down on a fellow Swede, I really don’t like this version at all – especially compared to the Shirelles’ original version.
I think it’s her vocals. I am just not digging it at all. Plus, the fact that I could play this on piano makes me less impressed. (Because I suck at piano.)
However, if this means that I am good enough to cover doo wop songs, then I pick:

Wow you’re hating on a Swede? This is a first…

I just don’t like her voice – I don’t know … to me it sounds like Britney Spears trying to sing like Marianne Faithful. Let me try some of her other stuff and get back to you. Some people just need production.

Just for the record, I also PAID FOR a Red Elvises album, so I’m not claiming anything along the lines of haute palate.
Just thought I should throw that in before I sound too pretentious.
