Former Disney Star, Miley Cyrus, Ready to Reveal her Thorns
December 11th, 2009 by APMiley Cyrus’ cover of Poison’s Every Rose Has Its Thorn a preview of career
The idea was recently tossed around that Miley Cyrus is ready to break out. She’s ready to shed her young-girl, Disney image in favor of a much more mature identity.
That’s hardly surprising as most recently music fans witnessed the transformation of pop princesses Brittany Spears and Christina Aguilera into (presumed) music queens.
Spears and Aguilera are far from music queens, but the point is, moving away from the junior high, pre-teen image is natural. The criticism from most is in the way it is done.
Aguilera had a brief period in which she became slightly edgier, but quickly resorted to a more conservative look. Spears, on the other hand, chose to go the Lindsey Lohan route. Not the conservative path most mothers might take, but it was probably the most economical. And that is the perceived direction Cyrus is hinting she might go.
Cyrus doesn’t have kids of her own, but her most recent target audience might be more influenced by her actions than the parents of the junior highers want to admit.
That’s not her problem, save for social reflection and image control, but whether or not the fans of the Disney star want to follow the trend, Cyrus’ most recent cover ¬— Poison’s Every Rose Has Its Thorn — might be more a precursor for what is to come than what her past resembles.
It was revealed in People magazine that Poison was one Cyrus’ first live shows, and the song is one of her longtime favorites.
No criticism should be given for her song selection (though the performance might be subject to scrutiny). After all, it has been reported that Poison frontman Bret Michaels is actually lending a hand and might even perform on the studio recording.
But perhaps this is an early caution being thrown at some of her critics, suggesting that as glowing and pure as she once was perceived, Billy Ray Cyrus’ rose does, in fact, have thorns that will no doubt be made more visible as her music career progresses.

AP – can’t say I’m a Miley Cyrus fan by any means, but I can see how she is a younger generation’s equivalent to Britney & Christina. It’s always a tricky transition from young-tween star to a more mature artist and while I don’t care much for her sound or voice – hoping she can find a way to re-invent herself without becoming the next Britney Spears (from an antics perspective).

I can’t see her making the jump. I just don’t see it …
