Nada Surf to Cover Kate Bush, Others

January 6th, 2010 by Forest

I’ve always like Nada Surf – even before I knew I did. I first heard “Deeper Well” on 89.5 KQAL in Winona longer ago than I’d care to admit. Later, I learned that it was the same group who had done “Popular,” everyone’s favorite guide to young romance. I would go with The Proximity Effect as a high water mark, but Nada Surf has always been consistent, turning out accessible, indie rock for over a decade.

(Don’t listen to Pitchfork, they’re just mad everyone isn’t covering “My Girls.”)

That’s why, even though everyone and their mother has released a cover album – from Duran Duran to Mark Kozelek – but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t pumped to hear Nada Surf cover Kate Bush.

These are my top three Kate Bush songs that Nada Surf should cover. However, I’m going to go ahead and bet that they cover “Running Up that Hill.” Anyone else care to hazard a guess? If you win, you can send me a customized “Booyah, I told you so.”

1) An Orenda Fink + Nada Surf cover of “Don’t Give Up”

2) “Hounds of Love”

3) “Wuthering Heights”

The rest of the album will range from the Moody Blues (“Question”) to Depeche Mode (“Enjoy the Silence”). I have to be honest, I would have been down with a cover of “Barrel of a Gun” or “It’s No Good.” At least it’s not “Personal Jesus” … which would have been my guess if it didn’t say on their site.

Thanks to Ben at Sonic Dissonance for the news!
