March Music Madness Elite Eight: Broken Social Scene vs. Beat Radio, Vampire Weekend vs. The Dirty Rooks, Tony Lucca vs. Ashley Arrison, Matthew Mayfield vs. Sondre Lerche

The Round Table

Time for the Elite Eight! March Music Madness has definitely lived up to its name as the unexpected underdog seeds have managed to easily trounce the mainstream, big-name competition. The results have told us a lot about the type of artists you want to see more of, and when March Music Madness concludes, The Round Table will do its best to bring you more stories about these awesome indie artists. But we still have some unfinished business.

(8) Broken Social Scene vs. (7) Beat Radio
It seemed almost improbable that this match-up would actually happen. The idea that Broken Social Scene and Beat Radio could get enough votes to work their way through the TRT March Music Madness isn’t as surprising as perhaps the bands and artists they defeated on their way to the Elite Eight. Broken Social Scene knocked off what is arguably the hottest act currently in the music industry. As if Broken Social Scene defeating Lady Gaga wasn’t impressive enough, Beat Radio pulled together enough votes to cast aside the internet’s most loved young artist (Justin Bieber). Then, in the Sweet 16, the same fan base drummed up enough support to defeat Dave Matthews Band, which ultimately is known for working their way to the top through grassroots followings. Now, only one will survive to advance to the Final Four.

(4) Vampire Weekend vs. (7) The Dirty Rooks
A band that made its way past MGMT and Jay-Z in back-to-back rounds probably shouldn’t be taken lightly. Vampire Weekend without question has a following worthy of helping them to the Final Four. But in order to do so, they will have to bypass a band that has taken the Chicago music scene by storm — The Dirty Rooks. Riding the hype of their latest release, Sugar Mama, The Dirty Rooks slid past Alicia Keys before drumming up support on Monday for an impressive win over The RAA. Vampire Weekend is the highest seed remaining in TRT March Music Madness, but by tugging on the roots of their classic rock foundation, The Dirty Rooks just might pull off another upset of seeds.

(8) Tony Lucca vs. (7) Ashley Arrison
It’s a showdown The Round Table has been anticipating (read: fearing) for the last week. Could there be a better match-up? Tony Lucca and Ashley Arrison are both singer-songwriters who emphasis lyrical composition. Both represent L.A.’s music scene though neither were born there, and both have dominated the tournament with two of the highest single-day totals. Now, here’s what you might not know about them. They’re old friends with one-degree separation from Justin Timberlake. Tony Lucca started his singing career on the Mickey Mouse Club alongside fellow Mouseketeers Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera. Meanwhile, Ashley Arrison started her career as a singing partner to a pre-MMC Timberlake, which culminated with their audition for MMC. While Arrison didn’t make the final cut — producers considered her to be too tall for the part (suck it, Disney!) — she’s managed to carve out her place in the indie music scene. So who moves on, Tony Lucca or Ashley Arrison? More importantly will TRT stay online? Fingers crossed…

(8) Matthew Mayfield vs. (6) Sondre Lerche
Matthew Mayfield embarrassed hit-maker Jason Derulo (sorry, FT!) in the Sweet 16, easily advancing to today’s Elite Eight. But it’s hardly over, and Mayfield better bring his A-game. Sondre Lerche has been quietly gaining momentum throughout the tournament. Monday, Lerche’s fans had a strong showing to help propel him past up-and-comer Daphne Willis. If you’ve been a fairly regular visitor to TRT, you already know both of these artists are loved for their unique sound and heartfelt lyrics. One will be ousted, but that’s the way it goes in March Music Madness. Who will it be? We’ll let you decide.
