New Music: “Nothing” by Janet Jackson

As JayVee and I are both major Janet Jackson fans, we were both looking forward to “Nothing”, her new single and the theme to her new movie, “Why Did I Get Married Too?” (which opens next week). However, “Nothing” turns out to be one of the worst songs ever released under Janet Jackson’s name. Produced by Jermaine Dupri (didn’t these guys break up?), it’s monotonous and tuneless. Janet’s vocals have no fire, and as my girl JayVee said herself, it just seems like a lame rehash of “Again”, the Academy Award-nominated theme from Janet’s movie debut “Poetic Justice”.

It sucks that pretty much everything Janet has recorded in the past half-decade has been disappointing, especially since I want so badly to root for her. Since she parted ways with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, her music seems to have regressed. Those three need to re-connect-they do their best work with one another. Janet also needs to make a truly biographical album that reflects where she is as a black woman in her forties that has gone through some stuff in her life. Sort of an age-appropriate update of “Control”. I think that would suit her a lot better than her lame attempts at keeping up with the joneses.

That said, as much as I dislike Tyler Perry, “Why Did I Get Married Too?” looks like a good movie and Janet’s scenes look the most interesting of them all. Maybe it’s time to switch gears and move forward as an actress? Check out the song after the cut – we want to hear your thoughts!

I’m so underwhelmed by this song that I can’t even muster the disappointment to comment profoundly. If there was ever a time for her to come with something amazing, this was it. We all know Tyler Perry’s movie is going to open at #1, but this song attached to it will only taint her music career more than it is.

  • haha

this song is about a woman whos been trough shit, shes not suppose to sound ON FIRE. but emotional and damaged. dumbass

  • umm ?

i don’t think we’re listening to the same song? do you have the right song? maybe you should double check or something cos ‘nothing’ is amazing. maybe you two should get your ears checked. and who cares if they’re broken up, they’re still friends. JANET doesn’t need to anything. it’s her choice what she wants to do and as fans we should support her no matter what even if you’re not happy with it. you’re a fan, your opinion doesn’t matter and that’s the way it should be. the radio host the premiered the song had ONE bad comment to his twitter and he replied “you are a table for one at the bar my friend the fans have spoken.” <- exactly. you people who don't like it can all fit in one small room cos there's not many of you. one more thing . . how can you NOT like tyler perry? o_O

Last I checked we lived in a free country and people were entitled to their opinions. You like the song-great. You don’t speak for everyone. I don’t like the song. I don’t speak for everyone, either, and I’m not saying I do. I’m just offering my opinion because I have the forum to do so.

How can I not like Tyler Perry? Easy. I think his work plays on negative stereotypes of black people. I appreciate what he has done for himself, especially coming from the background he came from, but I think a lot of his work is about 2 watermelons short of a minstrel show. Again-my opinion. And if my opinion doesn’t matter, then why even write a comment about it?

  • Excuse Me

Jimmy & Terry were on every album except the last album Discipline. So yea you make no sense to say you haven’t enjoyed any music from Janet in the last few years. They worked together up until 2006.

Anyway i love the new song and judging by the response from people its going to do very well.it is already in the top 20 on Itunes R&B single chart within hours of being released. GO JANET!

That’s not what I said. I said “pretty much everything Janet has recorded in the past half-decade has been disappointing”, which indicates that there were some songs that I *didn’t* find disappointing. That’s not the same as “I haven’t enjoyed any music from Janet in the last few years”.

Um? – Let’s get one thing straight I’ve been a DIE HARD Janet fan my entire life. I’ve supported everything she’s done not just from a fan perspective, but also monetarily. That being said, this isn’t a matter of just showing support for a song because I love Janet Jackson – rather this post addresses her need to evolve musically. She’s been stale since All For You, musically. Same tunes, same structure, no real emotion. “Nothing” is not even close to being an “amazing” song – no climax, crescendo, or even lyrics that resonate. Seems like a half-ass attempt at trying to re-create Again, but at least musically, “Again” soared, not just lyrical but through composition.

    – I agree – Janet (and any artist for that matter) doesn’t HAVE to do anything – but from a creativity standpoint, she should WANT to. Why is she settling for subpar material.

love the new song and the movie looks like it’s going to be great. with that being said, “I would still like Janet to step it up with new management, producers and vocals, her vocals with Jimmy and Terry was much stronger and memorable. She set the bar back in the day and it’s time she set it again. Love U Janet!

I think the song was good. and if you listen to the words (and see the wdigmt trailor or movie) you’ll see that this song fits the movie perfectly. It captures all of the issues from each couple and she incorporated it into this song. I like the song and Janet Jackson. Every artist goes through a dry spell and if this is her time then let her have her time w/o all the negativity associated w it.

I love this song…I do not think that we were listening to the same song…It is good. The lyrics fit the movie…I wish that I had not clicked on your page…it is very negative!!!

Troy, sorry you feel our page is “negative,” which isn’t our intent. Our intent is to have a real dialogue about music, we don’t squash others opinions, in fact, we encourage them. So while you’re loving Janet’s “Nothing,” realize that everyone might not agree. We’re not trying to sway your opinion, just stating ours. We’re glad you stopped by to check out the site. Seriously, stick around – see some of our other posts – if you’re interested in only Janet, search for some of our other posts on her – you’ll see they’re immensely positive. There’s quite a few of us writers for the site who have been Janet fans for YEARS (myself included) and want nothing, but continued success for her. :D
