The Fray is a band that everyone knows, and I think that everyone loves. It’s easy to lump them into popular music, and we all know that Grey’s Anatomy sure helped them do that, something I’m not proud of, but they manage to write haunting melody’s with dramatic lyrics, and mix that in with one of the smoothest raspy voices I’ve ever heard and you get pure magic.

On Friday January 20th, I had a chance, along with 200 other people, to see the Fray perform a small acoustic set downtown in Tribeca at the P.C. Richard & Son Theater. I rushed out of work as quickly as I could and got a third row center spot. The set, which is simultaneously webcast through z100, began at 7 and The Fray launched into a very acoustic set.

I had seen them once before, at Jones Beach (which just happens to be the worst venue acoustically) so this was a real treat to see them up close. Frontman Isaac Slade was very comfortable in front of the crowd — engaging them with playful banter throughout the set. Naturally, I had to have some fun so I told the fellas they should all get a tattoo to commemorate being in a band together for 10 years. They promised they’d take the suggestion under consideration, so remember if they go through with it — you heard it here first. Now on to the show…

The Fray launched into an acoustic version of their latest song “Heartbeat” off their third album Scars and Stories, due out in February. They also played all the fan favorites “Over My Head (Cable Car)”, “How To Save A Life” and my personal favorite “You Found Me.”

The setting was so intimate that I couldn’t even sing along since I would have been competing with the lead singer, and I’m pretty sure no one showed up that night to hear me. What impressed me most about The Fray, was how effortless it all seemed for the lead singer. He seemed so relaxed and singing to him looks like he’s just having a conversation with the audience. It comes so naturally to him I had jealousy pangs that he was born with that voice. After seeing them so up close and personal, I’m not sure how I’ll manage to ever see them without a front row spot. I’m anxiously awaiting them to announce their U.S. tour and am hoping it’s general admission so I can get right up front and melt to the music all over again.

Check out some photos below as well as The Fray performing “Heartbeat.”
