Forest aka TRT’s resident Jason Derulo fanboy has been desperately trying to get me to jump on the bandwagon. All attempts have failed miserably. That is…until today… when I stumbled upon this remix of Derulo’s “In My Head.”
So why the sudden change of heart? Two words. Nicki Minaj. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, is there anyone chick in the rap game who’s working harder than Nicki Minaj?! I think not. Now, Ms. Minaj has spit some crazy-ass-fire on the already “catchy” (by Forest’s definition) song “In My Head.”
But don’t take my word for it – listen for yourself below. Sickest verse? “Smash more clubs than Tiger Woods wifey/Ha! I am the biiitch…./Hit up JR and tell him to call Jason/Do a pop song and stack more Caucasians.”
The name Kimberly Caldwellmight ring a bell, that is, if you got sucked into American Idol when it was still considered a novel idea rather than what it’s become today. Even though Caldwell made it into the Top 10 finalists during season 2 of American Idol, her path to music stardom hasn’t followed the prototypical AI formula (read: rush an album to distribution to capitalize on ratings). Rather, it’s been a slow build for Caldwell, who is finally set to release her debut album Without Regret (April 6th).
Check out the music video of her lead single “Mess of You” after the jump. Honestly, I forgot how much I enjoyed her powerful, raspy vocals – which sound like a mix between Kelly Clarkson (strained) and Melissa Etheridge. If you like what you hear, you should definitely check out Caldwell’s official site for a free download of “Say Love” off the upcoming album. (more…)
What is music? Well, the answer to that question is different for everyone, which is why we’re pretty stoked to hear of this latest documentary called The Heart is a Drum Machinewhere many of today’s artists and scholars grapple with the question at hand for a unique look at the human obsession.
This feature documentary was directed by Christopher Pomerenke, produced by the makers of 2006’s Moog, and features Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips), Jason Schwartzman, Elijah Wood, Andrew VanWyngarden (MGMT), Britt Daniel (Spoon), Juliette Lewis, John Frusciante and more. The Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd also wrote and performed the film’s original score and covered Elton John’s “Rocket Man” with Maynard James Keenan on vocals.
The DVD is out today (March 9th) and will be available On Demand starting April 1st. For you Netflixers, you can add it to your queue now! Check out the film trailer after the jump – and stay tuned – we hope to have more on The Heart is a Drum Machine very very very soon.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Canadian teenager Justin Bieber has become the biggest thing in the pop music world. His upcoming release, “My World 2″ is slated to be one of the biggest releases of the spring, and his bubblegummy hit single, “Baby”, is in the Top Ten. You know you’re a pop culture phenomenon when comedians start doing bits about you, and Justin has found himself the unwitting subject of an absolutely hilarious skit on funnyordie.com.
Aziz Ansari (of “Scrubs” and “Parks and Recreation” fame) has a singing/rapping alter ego named Raaaaaaandy, who is a little pissed off that the Bieb came to the studio and allegedly stole the idea for “Baby” from his song “Baby Baby”. This is only the latest in a series of hilarious musical skits Ansari has blessed us recently, with the help of TV on the Radio producer Dave Sitek.
If you’re having a rough day, play this skit…it’ll definitely give you a chuckle.
I’ve racked my mind trying to draw lines between the disparate odds and ends present in the iamamiwhoami video series. If you’re reading this, then you probably have too. Between the animals, strawberries and vague Scandinavian references, it’s been confusing, sometimes rewarding and pretty much insane.
We’re expecting another video, or two, but I agree with ReMyky22 that this is probably going to end soon – if only because people are going to start losing interest. When the new video drops, I’ll be all over it.
However, until then, I’m interested in what all of you think.
MGMT is inviting six lucky fans, in six different cities, to go on a two-hour van ride and … well, we don’t really know what happens after that. With Congratulations!set to release in just about a month, the boys decided to try something a little different.
Instead of sending out advance copies, leaving USB drives in concert venue restrooms or doing just about anything tried and true, or unique, but still sane – MGMT is coming to your city, in a van, to take you for a ride.
Last night, we braved the drunken debauchery that is Hoboken’s St. Patrick’s Day parade (yes, 2 weeks early!) to catch Sondre Lerche at Maxwell’s. If you’ve never been to Maxwell’s it’s the equivalent of seeing a concert in an unfinished basement, but with exceptionally sticky floors.
We won’t bore you with all the stereo typical things that Hoboken-ites did like fist-pump (not kidding), shout throughout the set (seriously), and even start a bar brawl (not making this up!). But, leave it to Mr. Lerche to handle the atmosphere like a true pro, while digressing momentarily from his typical stage banter to liken the experience to a Jerry Springer show. Check out some concert photos below (thanks, Edgitator) as well as the crowd sing-along to “Modern Nature.”
LCD Soundsystem is set to release its follow up to ’07’s breakout album Sound of Silver on May 18th (May 17th for our UK readers). James Murphy, the man behind LCD Soundsystem, told Pitchfork that the album caps out at “nine tracks and [will] run 65 minutes” long.
Murphy also disclosed that his label is currently deciding between two tracks called “Drunk Girls” and “Change” for the first single. Check out the full track list after the jump and one of my favorite tracks off Sound of Silver,”New York I Love You, but You’re Bringing Me Down.” Yeah, that’s right… I said it. (more…)
Every band’s got a “thing” – Spoon has attitude, Grizzly Bear is pretty, Death Cab likes metaphors, but Beat Radio is just awesome. With every new song Brian Sendrowitz puts out, I am both amazed and ecstatic that someone is still releasing indie rock this catchy.
This isn’t new. We’ve expressed our love for Beat Radio before and, if you thought we were going to get all M. Night Shyamalan up in this B, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. If, however, you were hoping for new Beat Radio songs, then you are in luck, my friend!
While the two new tracks fit with what we’ve been hearing lately, they’re definitely unique in their own right.
“Golden Age” pairs a warped guitar and live drums against an ominous wall of sound, managing to sound both hopeful and slightly stormy. The second track, a cover of The Diggs “… and the end shoot back” continues with the dense and dark waves of sound, but mashes them with a beat loop straight out of Afrika Bambaataa’s “Looking for the Perfect Beat.”
Perfection, indeed.
Have a listen, and download, “Golden Age” and “… and in the end shoot back” after the jump.
Earlier this week we brought you an exclusive interview with John Speyer, The Postellesbassist, and now we bestow upon you free music from the band. Today, The Postelles released their new EP, White Night (go get it!!) and to celebrate, you can download lead single “White Night” for free. It’s a must have for any party mix being made — Forest, that means download it now!!
And yes, for the record (again), I fully support the indie-rock movement to revive 50’s/60’s sound. Bring it on boys!!
We started as a three friends having conversations about music during lunches together at the office. Since then we have expanded to seven members, including a Chi-town native, and the conversations have gotten bigger and better. The Round Table has grown into a casual setting where music aficionados can gather to discuss all things music. Topics include (but not limited to) artists and bands, new music releases, concerts, recording industry news and concerns, and the occasional nugget of entertainment gossip. We have tastes that cover the entire music spectrum and love to share them (and our opinions) with each other. We are The Round Table! Come join the conversation!
