Millah Mix: The Best of Jon Brion feat. Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, Rufus Wainwright, Kanye West, Elliott Smith, Of Montreal, Spoon & More

If anyone knows me at all, they know I love Jon Brion. But does everyone else know Jon Brion? I would guess not, because WHY IS HE NOT MORE FAMOUS. But seriously, his music is so perfectly accessible – the throwback pop sensibility of a fuzzy guitar, the ridiculously memorable piano melody, the not-overdone orchestration.

It’s no wonder that Brion has repeatedly worked with (and is beloved by) some of pop music’s best auteurs: Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright, Aimee Mann, Elliott Smith, and yes, Kanye West, among others. The Kanye thing was a bit of a shock to me, too, at first – but you can tell that West’s song structure and albums-as-a-whole have benefitted from Brion. And with that, here’s 21 of my favorite JB jams that he either produced, performed solo, or performed on.

This is in no way an exhaustive mix – the most glaring omission being his fantastic and rare solo album Meaningless, which isn’t available on Spotify. But if you have the means to find it, I highly recommend it.
