At 19 years old, Matthew Fowler just might be the next wonder kid of the music industry. Fowler, who picked up a guitar and started writing a mere 4 years ago, is already being compared to more established singer-songwriters like Damien Rice and Ben Howard. That’s impressive company for sure, but I’d even add comparisons to great American songwriters like Matt Duke and Jay Nash to that list of artists.
Recently, he premiered “Blankets,” a song from his debut album Beginning, via American Songwriter. At first listen, the single highlights Fowler’s voice, which is without question raw and mature beyond his years. But you quickly realize how special the tone is as it provides texture and richness against a melodic backdrop of acoustic guitar strums, piano, and trumpet. That’s pretty remarkable when you consider that “Blankets” was “a very last-minute addition to the album,” as Fowler confessed to American Songwriter.
His debut album, Beginning, is set for release on March 25th, stay tuned for more details.
