Last night on NBC The Voice Season 5, the Battle Rounds continued as the coaches pitted their contestants head-to-head for the chance to move on to the live Knock Out Rounds.
The show began with Team Christina who paired pop-rocker Jacob Poole against indie phenom Matthew Schuler for a performance of Fall Out Boy’s “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light’em Up).” The anthemic pop song lends itself to more call-response approach for the battle with lots of moments to stand out individually. The performance had potential to be great, but “My Songs” is not an easy song to sing (props to FOB’s frontman Patrick Stump) and both singers seemed to struggle at times. After a tough decision, Aguilera selected Matthew Schuler to move on.
For the next pairing, CeeLo matched glam-rocker Kat Robichaud against gospel singer R. Anthony for a rendition of Aerosmith’s power ballad “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.” The performance was evenly matched and really lacked a standout moment for either contestant. CeeLo chose Kat Robichaud to move on based on her “hunger and intensity.”
In the abbreviated section of the show where only quick highlights were shown, CeeLo matched eclectic pop singer Cole Vosbury against flower delivery man Lupe Carroll. CeeLo chose Cole Vosbury to move on. Voice-over/Actress EG Daily was paired with pop artist Sam Cernigilia; EG Daily advanced. Meanwhile, Levine paired single mom Ashley Dubose vs. aspiring country singer Justin Blake for a performance of “Just a Fool.” Ashley DuBose was selected to move on.
For a the final pairing of the night, Shelton matched up soul singers Monika Leigh and Ray Bordeaux for a rendition of “Some Kind of Wonderful.” Mentor and legend Cher put the tough love down on Monika during rehearsals by telling her she needs to stay consistent with her performance. Though both singers struggled at times in rehearsals, they both brought their “A” game to the battle stage. After much deliberation, Shelton chose Ray Bordeaux to advance. But it wasn’t the end of the road for Monika Leigh as CeeLo saved using a steal.
