VH1’s New Crop of “Divas”: Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, Adele….Miley Cyrus?

Vh1 is reviving the Divas show after a four year hiatus and has crowned a new crop of “sirens.” On tap to lead the all-star line up are Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and Miley Cyrus. Miley, who?!

Adele makes sense. The girl can straight up sing. Kelly Clarkson, well you know our feelings about KC by now, but we’ll refresh your memory. She’s quite possibly the most underrated female “popstar” out there. She not only sings her ass off, but she actually writes and produces her own music – unlike the majority of chicks in the game. That’s right Princess RiRi, we’re looking at you.

Leona Lewis. Well. I’m torn on this one. She’s got super sweet vocals, a loveable grin, but she’s plain old boring. I want to love this girl – I really tried hard to get behind her album Spirit, but she’s pretty forgetable.(Sorry, Simon.)

Then there’s Miley Cyrus. Seriously? Miley f-in Cyrus is a “diva?” I mean, maybe in her temper-tantrum throwing ways, but being shoved down everyone’s throat by Disney shouldn’t quantify as being honored in the likes of Divas’ past including: Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Cher, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Chaka Khan. Call me a hater, but Diseny needs to away — now — and take Miley with them.

If you care to catch the show, VH1 Divas is set to air live Thursday, Sept. 17 at 9/8c. Additional performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks. All funds raised from the show will go to the  VH1 Save The Music Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education in American public schools, and raising awareness about the importance of music as part of each child’s complete education.

I know, but, taking a new, more positive approach for this, and don’t want to harp on the negative connotations that might come with the word “diva” – looking at more aspirational, emerging, under 30, at this point because realistically, that’s what’s topping the charts these days and more relevant. Trust me, I’d love to see bigger, but sounds like “passing the baton” is what’s happening here.

I’d agree – a new generation to bring along, but some of the choices (so far) are far-reaching. Miley, Leona…don’t know if we’ll be singing their praises in another 5 yrs or so. There are some you can tell that will always have a career should they choose – Beyonce, Alicia, Christina Aguilera. Passing a baton to a 16 yr old is a bit crazy.

What about LL? That girl was a one-time, teenage drama queen. A hot, tough everyday wannabe … wait, VH1 is still a channel?
What time is “Pop-up Video” on?
