TRT Reviews: Matt Skiba and the Sekrets – Babylon

Matt Skiba and the Sekrets - Babylon

The reaction to Matt Skiba and the Sekrets debut album, Bablyon, will be a lot like your reaction to Ben Folds debut album, Rockin’ the Suburbs, and that response was probably something along the lines of “He had to go solo to release this?”

And after a few listens to Babylon, as with Rockin’ the Suburbs, I can kind of see where Matt Skiba was going when he decided the songs recorded with the Sekrets needed to fall under a separate name. Being said, if you’re an Alkaline Trio fan, you’ll enjoy the Sekrets. It’s an extremely satisfying followup to This Addiction.

Is it as much of a departure as Heavens was? Not really, but it is a lot more even than Patent Pending. In short, it’ll fit well with the rest of your Skiba tracks, be they Alkaline Trio or otherwise. That’s not a passive submission. I love Alkaline Trio and hold them to a high standard. On the whole, Babylon hits that threshold without too much trouble.
