Vh1 revived its Divas show after a four year hiatus and crowned a new crop of “sirens” last night at the Brooklyn Music Academy to share the status of diva-dom with the likes past recipients in Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Celin Dion and more. New “inductees” to the Diva family included Jennifer Hudson, Miley Cyrus, Adele, Leona Lewis, Jordin Sparks, and of course, Kelly Clarkson. Though these young talents still have a lot to prove when it comes to longevity in relation to their predecessors, one thing is for certain, these ladies came to sing.
The show started off with an energetic, sometimes spastic and clearly lip-synced medley from host Paula Abdul featuring past hits in “Cold Hearted Snake,” “Forever Girl,” Straight Up,” and “Opposites Attract.” Thankfully, the real talent took to the stage soon after as lovely Jennifer Hudson knocked out her hit “Spotlight,” followed by a more subdued Kelly Clarkson who slowed things down with her current single “Already Gone,” backed by the majority of her band (where was DJ Ric?!).
