New Music from Beat Radio – “Golden Age,” “… and in the end shoot back”

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Beat Radio - photo by gilbert ngEvery band’s got a “thing” – Spoon has attitude, Grizzly Bear is pretty, Death Cab likes metaphors, but Beat Radio is just awesome. With every new song Brian Sendrowitz puts out, I am both amazed and ecstatic that someone is still releasing indie rock this catchy.

This isn’t new. We’ve expressed our love for Beat Radio before and, if you thought we were going to get all M. Night Shyamalan up in this B, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. If, however, you were hoping for new Beat Radio songs, then you are in luck, my friend!

While the two new tracks fit with what we’ve been hearing lately, they’re definitely unique in their own right.

“Golden Age” pairs a warped guitar and live drums against an ominous wall of sound, managing to sound both hopeful and slightly stormy. The second track, a cover of The Diggs “… and the end shoot back” continues with the dense and dark waves of sound, but mashes them with a beat loop straight out of Afrika Bambaataa’s “Looking for the Perfect Beat.”

Perfection, indeed.

Have a listen, and download, “Golden Age” and “… and in the end shoot back” after the jump.

Free Music: Ghostface Millah Mix Volume 2 (More Awesome New/Leaked Music!)

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

By “popular” “demand” I’m continuing what I started with last month’s Ghostface Millah Mix Volume 1 by giving you, dear readers, whatever excellent new music I’ve acquired or gotten-into of late. I present to you the Ghostface Millah Mix Volume 2.

If I do say so myself, it’s better than the first. For starters, it’s longer which means more goodness for you, and, just like last time, it’s a decent combo of blogosphere well-knowns and some deeper cuts from recently released albums to which I just can’t stop listening.

Download, listen and let me know what you think!

Matthew Mayfield Releases New EP “Breathe Out in Black”

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Breathe Out in Black EPClearly, we’re on a Matthew Mayfield kick here at TRT after naming him as one of our picks for “Makin’ It” in 2010. This morning I woke up to a lovely email from Matthew himself, ok, well because I’m on his mailing list that stated the following:

Although I think that Valentine’s Day is a bogus holiday, it’s certainly a reminder of all things romance, all things heartbreak, all things loved, and all things lost.  The songs on this EP come straight from my heart.

‘Can’t Change My Mind’ is the love letter.  ‘Simple’ is the truth.  ‘Breathe Out in Black’ is the regret.  ‘Ease Your Mind’ is the hope around the bend.  ‘Revelation’ is the new beginning.

Yes, he’s a man after my own heart with those words!! Matthew also noted that he didn’t want a label to distribute the album, rather, he wanted the fans to  feel empowered to pass it along, therefore, he made it very easy to share it. Don’t worry, Matthew, we won’t let you down! Stream songs from the new EP after the jump — and also get a free download of “Can’t Change My Mind.”

Joe Firstman: New Album, NYC Show Details and Free Music

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Joe FirstmanJoe Firstman will perform at The Living Room in New York City this Saturday, February 13th, in support of his recently released full-length album El Porto. If you’re a fan of good old americana rock, this album should be part of your music collection. El Porto is heartfelt with immensely personal lyrics penned by Firstman, who has the innate ability to transport you to another time with his intricate delivery.

For those familiar with Firstman’s debut album The War of the Women, which I happen to LOVE, El Porto is a natural evolution. The songs that comprise the new album are simple, yet demonstrate a certain confidence of a singer-songwriter coming into his own. And, I’m not certain, but believe that “Today,” which is featured on El Porto could easily be a continuation of “Can’t Stop Loving You” from The War of Women. (Joe, if you’re reading this — give me a shout, dying to know).

New Josh Ritter Album in May – So Runs the World Away

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
Josh Ritter Live

What’s a great way to start the week? How about with news that Josh Ritter’s new album, So Runs the World Away, is coming in May?

Win!

It’s been just over two years since the singer/songwriter dropped the phenomenal Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter and fans (I speak for all of us) have been itching for some new music.

If you’ve caught Ritter live over the past few months, you may have heard a few demoed tracks here and there, but it’ll be good to have them locked down on an album.

In fact, you can download one of Josh Ritter’s new songs, “Change of Time,” for free, after the jump. If this is any hint of what’s to come, let’s just say you can color me pumped!

Round Table Interviews: April Smith

April Smith and the Great Picture Show

I have no idea what the child of Edgar Allen Poe and Dr. Frank N. Furter would look like, but I’m guessing it wouldn’t be as pretty as April Smith and the Great Picture Show sound. Luckily, Tim Curry and Poe are only two of the arrows in the April Smith’s quiver. Other influences include Wes Anderson, PJ Harvey, Tom Waits and Electric Light Orchestra.

As you might imagine, April Smith and the Great Picture Show are a bit hard to place. Sultry horns, dancing pianos and the sense that she wouldn’t be out of place in a 1940’s dance hall are just a few of the things that come to mind. Or they do for me – what do you think?

April Smith and the Great Picture Show – “Colors”

Luckily, we don’t have to rely on my questionable ability to name genres. April Smith was kind enough to give us her own thoughts on genre, sinking ships and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Read our interview with April after the jump.

About The Round Table

We started as a three friends having conversations about music during lunches together at the office. Since then we have expanded to seven members, including a Chi-town native, and the conversations have gotten bigger and better. The Round Table has grown into a casual setting where music aficionados can gather to discuss all things music. Topics include (but not limited to) artists and bands, new music releases, concerts, recording industry news and concerns, and the occasional nugget of entertainment gossip. We have tastes that cover the entire music spectrum and love to share them (and our opinions) with each other. We are The Round Table! Come join the conversation!
