Free Music: Mini Millah Mix 6/30/10 – New Ashley Arrison, The Roots, Magic Kids, The Teenagers, MNDR & More!

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Back with this week’s Mini Millah Mix and, let me tell you, this one is definitely a keeper. Don’t be scared off by a few unrecognizable names, cos I guarantee you’ll love every track. For example, I knew the second I heard Magic Kids‘ beautiful and aptly titled “Summer” (two weeks ago, via Gorilla vs Bear) that I had to share with y’all. Same goes for TRT fan favorite (and our first ever March Madness winner, natch!) Ashley Arrison’s “California”. Arrison’s flawless Nashville-lite delivery and the ivory tickling counter melody speak to me like few songs have in a while, making it a fantastic nugget of pop with staying power. Then there’s “Made Of”, the new track from The Teenagers, which they’ve decided to release after you promote it on Twitter. Also included is another seemingly-random-yet-incredibly-excellent reinterpretation of a little-known indie folk song, by late night TV’s best backing band, The Roots. The Millah Mix from a few weeks back included Monsters of Folk’s “Dear God [2.0]“, but this time we have a ‘remix’ of an even deeper cut from Joanna Newsom’s debut album: “[The Book of] Right On” off Milk-Eyed Mender. And maybe I know very little of Murder Mystery, but the Human League-ness of “I Am (If You Are)” makes me want to know it all.

If those descriptions don’t sound promising to you, a) you’re crazy and b) check out the other tracks, cos here’s the latest Mini Millah Mix!

Now let’s get to it.

Free Music: Ghostface Millah Mix Volume 2 (More Awesome New/Leaked Music!)

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

By “popular” “demand” I’m continuing what I started with last month’s Ghostface Millah Mix Volume 1 by giving you, dear readers, whatever excellent new music I’ve acquired or gotten-into of late. I present to you the Ghostface Millah Mix Volume 2.

If I do say so myself, it’s better than the first. For starters, it’s longer which means more goodness for you, and, just like last time, it’s a decent combo of blogosphere well-knowns and some deeper cuts from recently released albums to which I just can’t stop listening.

Download, listen and let me know what you think!

Joanna Newsom Says Have One On Me, Streams New Song “Good Intentions Paving Company”

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

The lovable, albeit a bit sensitive, and wholly enchanting chanteuse is back on the scene! On February 23, Joanna Newsom will release her third studio LP, Have One On Me, a triple (!) CD/LP package no doubt filled with her unique childlike vocals and penchant for music that sounds like it was recorded a really long time ago.

Go to Drag City to listen to the seven minute “Good Intentions Paving Company” (in the upper right corner) –which is undoubtedly one of the best, most accessible Newsom tracks I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. In short, I love it and I love her. Between this and previously leaked “81″, I’m super excited for HOoM.
