As introduced last week, the new and improved Millah Mix format is now a weekly post; a sampling of whatever music I’ve been rocking out to recently. Sure, they’re shorter, but it’s only so I can get the good stuff to you faster! And now you can download songs individually (if you so choose). So, that’s pretty cool. This one’s a good one, too. We got new Kid Cudi featuring a surprising-yet-completely-fitting guest, another excellent Major Lazer + La Roux collabo track from LazerProof, Kanye’s leak from last week, M.I.A.’s response track to the NYT drama (more on that at her blog), plus that sweet new Miike Snow track, “The Rabbit” (which Forest posted the video of last week) –and that’s only Side A!
Behold, the second Mini Millah Mix, of many more to come! Now let’s get to it. Download links, track list & more info after the cut. (more…)
You certainly can’t accuse Diplo and Switch of slacking off.
In addition to Major Lazer’s world tour in support of the debut Gunz Don’t Kill People Lazers Do, everyone’s favorite Jamaican commando somehow found the time to release a mixtape with Britain’s synth-driven diva La Roux.
The resulting Lazerproof is just under 50 minutes of electronic bliss, coming across as either a more atmospheric Major Lazor, or an edgier La Roux. But you don’t have to take my word for it …
UPDATED AGAIN AGAIN – Link is back! – “Alps” removed per request by Ratatat/XL Recordings. Replaced with LazerProof!
Memorial Day is upon us. Finally, it’s like, really Summer. Let’s celebrate the warmer weather and our fleeting freedom from the daily grind with some excellent new music. So call your friends, fire up the grill and pop open a cold one, cause this is the May 2010 Millah Mix. It’s rocking some brand new tracks from Robyn (you should be shocked if she wasn’t included), Usher, Sleigh Bells (amazing album –you must get it!), MGMT, and yes, even Katy Perry –who is making her second Millah Mix appearance in just as many weeks (if you recall, she did an awesome cover of the aforementioned MGMT’s “Electric Feel”). Oh yeah, and there’s also a brand spankin’ new Menomena track, as well as some new Ratatat, off their yet-to-be-released LP4 delightful LazerProof.
I dunno about you, but I always go really pop-y during the Summer. Honestly, it’s when radio gets the best and most ridiculous songs. Which is why this month’s mix is peppered with a few (more) radio-friendly tracks than ever before (coughKaty Perrycough). At any rate, I hope you enjoy it!
Download, listen and let me know what you think after the jump. (more…)
So this mix is a little different than earlier ones… For starters, it has a theme –cover songs!– and subsequently a title that’s slightly more descriptive. That being said, I’m still sticking with the whole whatever-excellent-new-music-I’ve-acquired-or-gotten-into-of-late, only this time they’re all covers. Which is basically just me saying this is by no means my definitive cover songs mix –that would, most likely, include The Braids‘ version of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Sheryl Crow’s take on “D’Yer Mak’er” and a slew of other randoms…
But I digress. I present to you: Cover Me!, the Ghostface Millah Mix, Volume 3. There’s some really well-knowns on here, referring to both songs and artists, but the overall intention is to make it a cohesive album with the traditional SIDE A / SIDE B kinda feeling. Basically, SIDE A is fun/upbeat and SIDE B is more down tempo…
After the jump, download, listen and let me know what you think.
Sure, Gucci Mane may have some problems. Maybe even a lot of problems.
Still, like him or not, the dude can still lay down a verse and, thanks to Diplo, one-half of Major Lazer, he’s got the beats to back it up. It’s really a win for all of us, as you can get it for free at Mad Decent.
Check out the first track below and, if you like this, you’ll like the rest of the album.
As you may or may not know, I am a huge fan of supergroups and superproducergroups. Duck Sauce falls into the latter, next to N.A.S.A. and Major Lazer, only they’re a bit more retro-feeling compared to N.A.S.A.’s Hip Hop club tracks and Lazer’s Caribbean dancehall bangers. The video(s) for their first song, “aNYway”, keep the retro feeling going. The first one has a Jackson 5-esque “American Bandstand” performance complete with washed out 70s network TV filter. It’s super fun and cheesy, if a little too obvious (read: it’s been done).
The second video, on the other hand. Is a bit…strange. It starts off as a straightforward reenactment of the archetypal pottery-making scene from the Patrick Swayze classic Ghost –but it really takes it to the next level, if you know what I mean.
There were some rumblings that M.I.A. would make a guest appearance on Diplo and Switch’s Major Lazer project, but after the official tracklist leaked, Ms. Maya was…well, m.i.a..
Don’t fret kids. According to Pitchfork, the rapper-singer has now shown up on a new Major Lazer mix, created for Mishka’s Keep Watch series. (via Gorilla vs. Bear)
The mix features Bjork, Ace of Base (wha?), Rye Rye and more with that psychedelic electronica flair that only Diplo can give it. While King Jammys “Judgment Day,” is a standout track for me, it’s M.I.A. that steals the show. Check her verse out at the 11 minute mark.
We started as a three friends having conversations about music during lunches together at the office. Since then we have expanded to seven members, including a Chi-town native, and the conversations have gotten bigger and better. The Round Table has grown into a casual setting where music aficionados can gather to discuss all things music. Topics include (but not limited to) artists and bands, new music releases, concerts, recording industry news and concerns, and the occasional nugget of entertainment gossip.
