New Music: “Nothing” by Janet Jackson

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

As JayVee and I are both major Janet Jackson fans, we were both looking forward to “Nothing”, her new single and the theme to her new movie, “Why Did I Get Married Too?” (which opens next week). However, “Nothing” turns out to be one of the worst songs ever released under Janet Jackson’s name. Produced by Jermaine Dupri (didn’t these guys break up?), it’s monotonous and tuneless. Janet’s vocals have no fire, and as my girl JayVee said herself, it just seems like a lame rehash of “Again”, the Academy Award-nominated theme from Janet’s movie debut “Poetic Justice”.

It sucks that pretty much everything Janet has recorded in the past half-decade has been disappointing, especially since I want so badly to root for her. Since she parted ways with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, her music seems to have regressed. Those three need to re-connect-they do their best work with one another. Janet also needs to make a truly biographical album that reflects where she is as a black woman in her forties that has gone through some stuff in her life. Sort of an age-appropriate update of “Control”. I think that would suit her a lot better than her lame attempts at keeping up with the joneses.

That said, as much as I dislike Tyler Perry, “Why Did I Get Married Too?” looks like a good movie and Janet’s scenes look the most interesting of them all. Maybe it’s time to switch gears and move forward as an actress? Check out the song after the cut – we want to hear your thoughts!

Jermaine Dupri Dishes on Janet Jackson’s New Song “Nothing”

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Super producer and sometimes rapper, Jermaine Dupri took a break from Sunday’s NBA All-Star game festivities to chat with MTV News about Janet Jackson’s new song “Nothing.” While JD did his best to dodge specifics of Janet’s new single, he did let us in on a few nuggets of info.  The song will be featured on the soundtrack of Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too?, in which Janet stars.

JD spoke about how quickly the song project came together by saying, “We had to do this record in like three days to get it into this movie – it was a last minute thing that her and Tyler [Perry] talked about.”

Janet Jackson: “There’s a Part of Me That’s Craving Escapism”

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Janet Jackson has shown no signs of slowing down in the wake of losing her big brother “Mike” (as she refers to him). The veteran pop star not only graces the cover of Gotham Magazine’s current issue, but also sits down with the editorial staff to discuss what’s in store for 2010 including a new movie, new book, and new album.

Jackson found solace in her work calling it “therapeutic.” She tells Gotham that she actually went from Michael’s service -  right back to work on Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too?” And that although at times she feels a bit “selfish” in continuing to work, she realized that she “can’t stop living” as a result of Michael’s death.

Jackson touches upon her upcoming album and what fans can expect. She says, “It’s going to be a little different. The writing is about life experiences. There’s a part of me that’s craving escapism, which is a sense of wanting to keep on moving with my work but also of coming to terms with reality. So I think it will be upbeat and light.”

As a longtime Janet Jackson fan, I’m hopeful that her recent life experiences, including the break-up of beau Jermaine Dupri, has fueled the creative juices for this next album. It’s been quite a while, since All For You (2001), that Janet has actively written on an album. For more on Janet, including her current favorite song (hint: it’s NOT Lady Gaga), pick up Gotham Magazine.

Janet Jackson Earns 19th Career #1 on Billboard With “Make Me”

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

All signs point to Janet Jackson’s year ending on a positive note, according to a sneak peak of next week’s charts, which has the veteran singer’s most recent hit “Make Me” sitting at #1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart.

The dance chart — unlike the other charts — gets compiled one week in advance and therefore its positions are often known a few days before all of Billboard’s charts are officially released every Thursday. Janet’s single,”Make Me” becomes the 19th No. 1 song of the singer’s career on the dance chart. The remaining charts will be released on Thursday morning.

Rodney Jerkins Calls Janet Jackson “His Sister,” Spills More Details on Her Next Album

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Janet-JacksonProducer Rodney Jerkins aka DarkChild continues to drop clues on what we can expect out of Janet Jackson’s upcoming 11th studio album. Jerkins, who has admired Jackson for years, told MTV News that he’s always been a fan of her music and what she’s created with long-time producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and that they “musically connect.”

So what can we expect out of the Jackson/DarkChild collaboration? According to Jerkins, “an emotionally driven album.” He goes on to tell MTV News that, “the studio has become a second home for her because with the whole situation with Michael [Jackson] happening, and I feel like right now, emotionally, she can come here and let all her feelings out. I got her writing again — she has the pen and the pad in her hand.”

Janet Sets the Rumors Straight on MJ Tribute Shows

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

There’s a lot of rumors swirling around Michael Jackson’s death especially with the massive opportunity to try and capitalize on filling some of the empty slots of his London tour dates with “tribute shows.”

Rumor has it that the remaining Jackson brothers are planning on two shows around what would have been Michael’s 51st birthday (August 29th) with Janet participating as an “opening act,” but Miss Janet is having none of that.

Janet’s never been one to comment on rumors, but we’re starting to see her emerge as a more outspoken (than usual) Jackson with the latest news out of her camp, which shoots down any speculation that she’ll participate in tribute shows tentatively slated for August 29th and 30th.
