Other than getting new Robyn tracks faster, one perk of the somewhat unorthodox Body Talk trilogy of mini-albums release schedule is that, by default, we also get to see how Robyn works on the road. Case in point: this video diary clip for “Hang With Me”, the first single from forthcoming Body Talk Pt. 2, shows Robyn & crew rehearsing in hotel rooms, clowning around the tour bus, prepping for events, doing a sound check, etc.
In other words, Robyn lets us hang with her (see what I did there?). And though she seems like one of the hardest working pop stars right now, I would gladly come along for the ride.
Download “Hang With Me” and check out other Robyn coverage after the cut. (more…)
Since I included this outstanding track on this week’s Millah Mix, it’s only fitting to follow up with a video post. Though not as visually stimulating as the clip for previous Converse-sponsored “3 artists, 1 song” track, “My Drive Thru” (which featured Santigold, Pharrell & Julian Casablancas), this video plays out the song’s mood really well. Plus, it’s fun to think about these 3 randos sharing a summer house on the Joizey Shore.
Just for fun, the Santigold/Pharrell/Julian Casablancas clip is after the cut. (more…)
I originally enjoyed this song because it was really fun to mimic Marina’s now-trademark vocal acrobatics coupled with that thumping beat and occasional computerized hand claps, but now we have a Sunday Comics-inspired video to go along with it. Complete with speech bubbles, Dick Tracy color palette, frenetic editing and silly yet lovable dance moves –this is pop art for pop music.
Another day, another Robyn post! This time around our most-blogged-about musical artist is giving us a new interactive media piece for Body Talk Pt. 1 opener, “Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do” –just like she did with the user-generated “Dancing On My Own” video– only now it’s in the shape of a 3D animated video (And don’t worry, it’s still good without glasses.) As I brought up in my review, to me this song is about freeing yrself from all the shit that bugs you. It’s an expression, an outlet –and Robyn extends it by letting us add our own things that are killing us. Just head on over to robyn.com/killingme to watch and be sure to add yr own grumblings via the #killingme hashtag on Twitter.
Don’t ever put MGMT in a box –figuratively or literally. Also, ice cream is delicious and colors are fun.
Off last year’s excellent Seek Magic, I’m pretty sure this Memory Tapes clip for “Bicycle” is comprised of visuals from that creepy boat ride scene in Willy Wonka –though, a lot less creepy.
Speaking of creepy, last, but certainly not least, we have The Flaming Lips video for “The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine”. Chock full of monkeys and shrouded people torturing a young woman, this one is, well, in a word, interesting. In a 4-letter abbreviation, NSFW. Head on over to Stereogum to watch, but be forewarned.
Known for being something of a music engineering pioneer, former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne recently gave a talk at TED regarding how architecture helped music evolve. He obviously knows a lot about the subject, both historically and experimentally, as his 2008 “Playing the Building” project suggests. I never got a chance to visit the installation in NYC (something I still kick myself for every now and then), and this video only makes me wish I had.
Check out the lecture below to see how Byrne succinctly follows the reactionary relationship of music to architecture (in all senses of the word) –from early civilization playing outside all the way up to modern day pop music on your iPod.
Countess Luann, of “Real Housewives of New York” fame, may be on to something: maybe money can’t buy you class, but it sure as hell can buy you a record deal (see: this). The Countess’ video one-ups the song’s horrendously awesome Fronch lyrics with painfully obvious, yet underwhelmingly mediocre shots: The Countess feels up some dudes and throws their money away, the Countess teaches a guy how to use silverware, the Countess punishes a guy for texting on a date. Honestly, my descriptions make it sound hotter than it is. I feel bad for the male models that had to endure this shoot just for a paycheck.
I will say this is the best the Countess has ever looked, though she’s starting to look dangerously close to Danielle from Real Housewives of New Jersey –uh oh!!
And just for fun, here’s the infamous and wholly unrelated clip where Teresa reams out Danielle for being a “prostitution whore”. Priceless. (more…)
What do you get when you combine powdered wigs, a pool party, cruising around L.A. and gallivanting on the beach? A really fun music video for “Holiday”, Vampire Weekend’s third single off Contra. Whoever accused VP of being stuffy was clearly mistaken.
YESSSSSS. Like we mentioned yesterday, the “Dancing On My Own” video dropped today. It’s nothing short of awesome –complete with angry dance moves, stuttering/stammering video playback, sweet hair (natch) and great clothes.
Dear Robyn: Thank you. From here on out, I will only air-punch-angrily during the beat-return at 2:42. I… Iloveyou.
In other Robyn news… what started as a typical “I’m bored” tweet from our girl Robyn to Kelis resulted in an all-out announcement of their joint tour, complete with promises of strobes, dancing shoes, confetti and lasers. Sounds like a blast. And with Kelis’ new evolution into electronica and dance music, this pairing seems perfect.

There’s a new iamamiwhoami video out, this one entitled “u-1,” and I have to ask myself why I still care. As far as I’m concerned, the creative team behind the iamamiwhoami video series has completely failed in carrying out the project. Clues led nowhere, questions went unanswered, themes left behind without a look back …
You can’t sate my curiosity with weird, giant man/boys, dammit! I want the truth, whether or not I can handle it.
Of course, that’s assuming their goal was to create a viral series of videos – which they did, for a while, whether or not they were trying to. Viral videos can spread on mystery, but there must be a payoff. There must be a time when all the time and energy you’ve put into solving the mystery are either validated or discarded.
We started as a three friends having conversations about music during lunches together at the office. Since then we have expanded to seven members, including a Chi-town native, and the conversations have gotten bigger and better. The Round Table has grown into a casual setting where music aficionados can gather to discuss all things music. Topics include (but not limited to) artists and bands, new music releases, concerts, recording industry news and concerns, and the occasional nugget of entertainment gossip. We have tastes that cover the entire music spectrum and love to share them (and our opinions) with each other. We are The Round Table! Come join the conversation!
